Two Positions Available at Alfred Wegener Institute: PhD in Land Surface Process and Technician in Geodata and Model Administration 

The Periglacial Research section at the Alfred Wegener Institute seeks applications for the position of a PhD researcher in land surface processes. This full-time position will work on land surface processes in the Arctic and their impacts on ecosystems and the local population.
This position will be based in Potsdam, Germany.

The successful candidate will work with model development, field measurements, and remote sensing. Persons with strong interests in geoscientific programming, geomorphological processes, climatology, and field work are encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will have a Master’s, or equivalent, degree in earth sciences, physics, or geophysics. Experience in numerical modeling or programming expertise, statistical, geospatial data handling are advantageous. Fluency in English language, written and spoken, is required. Good communication, teamwork, and writing skills are required.

Prior experience with expedition-based field research and permafrost landscape dynamics is an asset. The successful candidate will participate in multi-week field campaigns in the Arctic under potentially harsh environmental conditions.

Geodata and Model Administration
Alfred Wegener Institute
Potsdam, Germany

The Periglacial Research section at the Alfred Wegener Institute seeks applications for the position of a technical employee. This part-time position in geo- and climate data management and geo and scientific programming. This position will be based in Potsdam, Germany.

Application deadline: 16 June 2017.

The successful candidate will work on the maintenance, quality assurance, and documentation of the model code, the model data, and the model results. Furthermore, field campaigns are being conducted in Alaska and Canada as part of the research project. This position will also provide support for the preparation and post-processing of the field campaigns, on-site if necessary.

The successful candidate will have a diploma or bachelor degree in geo-informatics, computer science, geoengineering, geo-ecology, physics or geophysics, or related disciplines.

Additional qualifications include:

– Good to very good programming skills and experience in version control and quality assurance of scientific software,
– Knowledge of dealing with cluster systems,
– Experience in the creation and maintenance of databases and the visualization of scientific data,
– Willingness to work in an interdisciplinary and international research group, and
– Experience in dealing with geographic information systems is advantageous.
