Boreal forest, a nearly continuous belt of coniferous trees across North America and Eurasia. Taiga is dense forest with many fallen trees and marshy soil. The term derives form the southern Siberian Turkic-Mongol (taiga, taig, taika, daika). A large number of tree species are found in the taiga, including spruce, fir, cedar, pine, larch and birch and the taiga supports a relative rich diversity of animal species.
