The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office advise avoidance of non-essential travel outside the UK. Nordic countries have announced that visitors from abroad must be quarantined on arrival for 14 days. UK Arctic Research Station in Ny-Alesund is closed to everyone from non-Nordic countries with a revue set for 26 March.
The BAS Director and her action team have decided not to open the station this spring given that the situation is unlikely to change for some time. Consideration has also been given to the atypical circumstances at Ny-Alesund which is isolated, has no medical professionals, has a limited supply of drugs and has limited transport.
BAS will continue to monitor the Coronavirus situation and hope to open the station in mid-June for the summer season.
