Krycklan Catchment Study (KCS) is the most instrumented and well-studied catchment in the boreal region. The 70 km2 KCS builds on three decades of catchment science that grew up around the Svartberget field station and is currently one of the most ambitious projects integrating water quality, hydrology, and aquatic ecology in running waters in the world. At present, KCS includes 18 intensively instrumented and continuously monitored sub-catchments, an extensive soil sampling program, comprehensive lake carbon-balance studies, several long-term field experiments, and a large set of ancillary data.

The research area Degerö Stormyr consists of a 350 ha nutrient-poor, minerogenic mire representative of a large proportion of boreal wetlands. The site is one of the most instrumented and well-studied mires in the world and provides continuous estimates of total annual budgets for both water and carbon (C). This research began in the 1920s, with the experimental studies initiated in 1995.

The Svartberget research station is surrounded by 2500 ha of research land including forests, mires, lakes, and running waters. Since 1923 the area has been used for research only. High power electricity and fibre-optical cables for communication are distributed in the field at 15 sites in the forest, along-side lakes, streams, and mires for close field access and use.
