Put simply, food webs describe what ‘eats’ (or more correctly, ‘consumes’) what. Food webs are made up of food chains, e.g. plant (a primary producer) – herbivore – intermediate predator – top predator. Food webs also include scavengers and decomposers that feed on dead organisms. Food webs track the transfer of matter and energy between the different organisms. They are also the biological part of biogeochemical cycles since substances like carbon and nitrogen are transferred from one organism to another in a food webA food web is a description of feeding connections in an ecological community (i.e. a group of organisms).
